The historic city of Cartagena is a jewel on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. Here you will find both beautiful historic districts filled with colonial architecture and vibrant modern areas. The old town is surrounded by walls that once protected it from pirates. Colombia was one of the first countries the Spanish tried to colonize in the 16th century while searching for El Dorado, and Cartagena was named after the city of Cartagena in Spain. Strolling through the historic center, with its colorful colonial buildings and flower-covered balconies, feels like stepping into a postcard. In the Getsemani district you can admire its famous murals and street art. Do not miss the iconic Yellow Cathedral, built in 1877 and still remarkably well preserved. Today it stands as one of Cartagena’s most popular landmarks.

In Latin America you can explore the lush and rugged nature of the Amazon rainforest, which has a history of 55 million years. The Amazon is the largest forest on earth, stretching across nine countries and covering about 3 percent of the planet’s surface. Here you will encounter astonishing biodiversity. Over 40,000 plant species, 3,000 fish, nearly 400 reptiles, more than 400 mammals and 1,300 bird species thrive here, along with countless yet-to-be-discovered organisms. The immense Amazon River flows for 6,400 kilometers through this green wilderness, making it the second longest river in the world after the Nile. Hundreds of tributaries form a vast water network that merges into this single giant river. The Amazon is also home to an extraordinary animal kingdom including black caimans up to 5 meters long, electric eels, giant anacondas, river dolphins and Brazilian giant otters reaching 1.7 meters.

Located 1,000 km off the coast of Ecuador, the mysterious Galapagos Islands consist of 19 main islands and 127 smaller islets and cliffs. The largest are Isabela and Santa Cruz. These islands are renowned not only for their landscapes, which range from volcanic craters to pristine beaches, but also for their unique wildlife. You can encounter giant Galapagos tortoises, blue-footed boobies and colonies of sea lions lounging on the shores. Surrounding waters host sharks, penguins, dolphins, sea turtles and whales, making the Galapagos one of the best diving spots in the world. The islands are managed under a special law by the Galapagos Governing Council to balance human activity and conservation, so entry and exit are carefully regulated to protect this fragile ecosystem.

In Argentina’s Los Glaciares National Park you will find the breathtaking Perito Moreno Glacier rising from the turquoise waters of Lake Argentino. The glacier stretches 30 km in length and an astonishing 7.3 km in height, fed by the Patagonian ice field that spawns 47 glaciers in total. Visiting Perito Moreno allows you to stand remarkably close to the towering ice wall. Walkways lead to viewpoints where you can watch in awe. The thunderous crash of ice chunks calving into the lake is unforgettable. Unlike most glaciers that retreat, Perito Moreno is one of the few in the world still advancing, a mystery that scientists are still trying to explain. Some believe its vertical growth pattern makes it more resilient.

On Cuba’s Hicacos Peninsula, better known as Varadero, lies the country’s largest and most popular beach resort. Its 21 km stretch of powder-white sand is often ranked among the world’s best beaches. Every year thousands of visitors come to relax under the sun, swim in turquoise waters and embrace Caribbean serenity. But Varadero offers more than a beach. Although less authentic than Havana or Santiago de Cuba, it still brims with Cuban culture. Art galleries, museums, cabarets, cozy bars and cafes, craft markets, live music, cigar and rum shops all contribute to its charm. Activities include diving, snorkeling, sailing, fishing, catamaran cruises, kite surfing and glass-bottom boat tours. Nature lovers can hike trails, explore caves, admire ancient cave paintings and discover the flora and fauna of Varahicacos Ecological Reserve. Varadero also features one of Cuba’s only two golf courses and boasts a lively nightlife with bars, discos and cabarets.

Stretching for 3 km, its cascades drop up to 85 meters, forming 275 separate waterfalls that together create an awe-inspiring panorama. With 1,500 cubic meters of water plunging every second, Iguazú is the largest waterfall system on earth. Surrounded by lush subtropical vegetation, Iguazú National Park is home to more than 2,000 plant species, 80 mammals and 400 bird species. About 80 percent of the falls are on the Argentine side, while Brazil hosts the other 20 percent. Many visitors choose to experience both sides since each offers unique perspectives and trails.
In northern Guatemala, Tikal National Park showcases the grandeur of the ancient Maya. Founded between 600 BC and 900 AD, Tikal was once the heart of the Maya Empire. Over 3,000 structures remain, including temples, palaces, terraces, ball courts and pathways. Among the highlights is Temple I, also known as the Temple of the Great Jaguar, a 47-meter pyramid with nine tiers that dominates the jungle skyline. As you explore, you will be surrounded by dense rainforest alive with monkeys, foxes and agoutis. Though less famous than Mexico’s Chichen Itza, the mist-shrouded limestone pyramids of Tikal rising above the canopy create an atmosphere that is both mysterious and unforgettable.

Hidden high in Peru’s Andes and surrounded by lush rainforest, Machu Picchu is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Built in the mid-15th century and abandoned in the 16th, this Inca citadel demonstrates extraordinary harmony with nature. Believed to have been a royal estate, it remained unknown to the outside world until 1911 when American explorer Hiram Bingham rediscovered it with the help of a local farmer. Its terraces, temples and stone walls are remarkable for their precision. Stones were fitted so perfectly without mortar that they still stand strong. Escaping destruction by the Spanish conquest, Machu Picchu today is one of the best preserved Inca cities and a symbol of human ingenuity.

In Chilean Patagonia, Torres del Paine National Park offers some of the most breathtaking landscapes on earth. Towering mountain ranges, sparkling glaciers, deep fjords and pristine forests combine to create an unforgettable wilderness. Trails wind through the park, revealing dramatic views at every turn. The park is named after its three iconic granite towers, rising dramatically above the landscape. The tallest peak, Paine Grande, stands at 2,884 meters. Wildlife is abundant. Guanacos roam the grasslands, condors soar with wingspans of over 3 meters, and with luck you might spot elusive pumas.
